  • Provides and implements the therapeutic recreational scope of service for the County’s therapeutic recreation services programs, ensuring compliance of facilities and resources with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Requires prior experience in the field of therapeutic recreation. Work is performed under technical supervision.


    Essential Job Functions

    Plans and implements activities and programs to meet the needs of individuals with various disabilities (year-round activities and summer camps) and ensures compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.


    Handles all aspects of program including supply purchase, payments, refunds, reservations, etc.


    Recruits and obtains instructors, negotiates contracts, sets fees, obtains facility, develops publicity, processes registration, monitors and evaluates activities, processes payments, and maintains statistical information on attendance and revenue.


    Facilitates inclusion of individuals with disabilities into parks and recreation activities.


    Coordinates externally with cooperating agencies. Meets with citizens, community and advocacy groups, Board of Education and other local, state, and federal government agencies’ staff to identify needs, plans programs, answers questions about recreation programs and represents the Division on issues related to leisure services for individuals with disabilities.


    Assists in writing grants; assists with planning and implementing fundraising activities.


    Assists in coordinating and developing training workshops for Division staff.


    Recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers. Plans, schedules, and assigns work.


    Publicizes programs and special events in newsletters, fliers, news releases and ads.


    Assists in preparing budget for programs and monitors revenues and expenditures. Prepares purchase requisitions, check requests, and initiates instructor contracts.


    Makes independent decisions regarding programs or participants.


    Attends various meetings relating to department functions.


    Attends workshops and classes related to recreation.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions)

    Knowledge of –

    • Principles and practices of recreational programming.

    • Autism Spectrum and other developmental, physical, and emotional disabilities.

    • Leisure Education.

    • Inclusion techniques and program/activity adaptations.


    Ability to –

    • Plan, organize, and lead specialized and inclusive recreational programs.

    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others encountered in the work.

    • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

    • Deal effectively with the public.


    Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)


    Training and/or Education:

    Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation or recreation with an emphasis in therapeutic recreation.


    Experience:

    One year of recreation programming experience


    Licenses or Certificates:

    Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation within one year of employment.

    Valid driver’s license.


    Special Requirements

    Subject to background investigation.

    Operation of County owned vehicle.


    Physical Demands:

    Requires long periods of standing, frequent walking indoors, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching or reaching; recurring lifting of objects up to 49 pounds; operation of keyboard devices.


    Unusual Demands:

    May be required to work evenings and weekends.

    Compensation Steps:

    Department of Parks and Recreation

    Pay rate: $32.18 - $34.44 per hour, $58,568 - $62,681 annually

    Grade 722, 35 hours per week
