Description

Do you love creating programs that inspire, engage, and bring communities together? The Southern Recreation & Leisure Services Division is seeking two energetic and creative Recreation Specialists to lead the development and implementation of innovative recreation programs throughout Prince George’s County. This role is ideal for a motivated professional who is passionate about and skilled in creating high-impact recreational experiences.

As a Course Programmer, you will design and manage a wide range of classes and events that reflect the vibrant diversity of our County, from fitness and arts to showcases and expos. You’ll lead instructors, staff, volunteers, and contractors, oversee budgets and revenue, and turn creative ideas into unforgettable experiences. Please note that the salary above represents earning potential. The budgeted salary range for these positions is $61,609 - $85,362. Salary is commensurate with experience. 

Examples of Important Duties

  • Developing, recommending, implementing, managing and coordinating division-wide classes and class related special events (class showcases, demonstrations, expos, registration fairs) designed to meet the needs of the community and that positively reflect the ethnic diversity of the area and County. 
  • Assists in defining goals, objectives and setting standards regarding course offerings. 
  • Coordinates and supervises class instructors, staff, volunteers and contractors. 
  • Plans, schedules, and assigns work.
  • Evaluates work and counsels staff. 
  • Recruits, selects, and trains staff and volunteers. 
  • Recommends disciplinary actions. Approves timecards and leave requests. Conducts staff meetings. 
  • Coordinates and adopts recreation classes to reflect sensitivity to unique characteristics of the community and its special interest groups into current programs. 
  • Represents the Department before various community groups and organizations who are interested in leisure service classes. 
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection of contractors and instructors for classes and events in compliance with Departmental and Commission guidelines.
  • Attends meetings with citizens, community groups, business groups and governmental units to identify needs, plan classes, and answer questions about recreation classes. Raises funds and or commodities through private donations, grants to help supplement program. 
  • Maintains records of revenues and expenditures, registrants and program participants. Meets daily and monthly administrative reports, cash reports, computer print-out; maintains proper records, responsible for budget. Responsible for budget monitoring and control. 
  • May serve as an information and referral source as well as a translator. 
  • Develops marketing strategies. Designs and develops advertising programs to publicize facility classes and promote attendance. Writes articles, newsletters, news releases, flyers, and ads. Prepares posters, signs, calendars, and other graphics. Prepares promotional material and promotes activities through diversified local groups and organizations, local newsletters and publications. Distributes promotional materials to individuals, news media, and groups interested in classes. Including active and passive classes culturally and linguistically relevant materials and public information. 
  • Manages and coordinates operating budget for revenue-producing classes and related programs. Prepares annual budget request for classes. Controls expenditures in accordance with approved budget. Monitors significant and complex revenue-producing classes. Oversees preparation and submission of cash management records and reports. Procures equipment and merchandise. Solicits bids and price quotes from vendors and contractors. Selects best offer and initiates purchase requisition, check requests and contracts. 
  • Conducts research. Attends professional seminars to identify new programs, methods, and equipment which might be useful for class programs. Researches technical publications or other government agencies to identify trends or seek information that would be useful to develop classes.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's Degree in Parks and Recreation, Recreation Management, Sports Management, Leisure Studies, Physical Education or any related field. 
  2. Two (2) years of recreation, sports administration/management, physical education, leisure services or other related professional experience.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years. 
  4. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's licenses must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of the position.
