Description

 The Aquatics & Athletic Facilities Division is seeking a Fitness Center Assistant Manager for the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex (Sportsplex). This position requires performing a wide variety of professional recreation work to assist in managing a multi-use venue. The successful candidate will participate in program planning, facility/venue management and general administration. This position will be responsible for performing day-to-day facility/venue operational duties such as marketing programs, monitoring budgets, supervising activities/events and maintaining the facility/venue.

 The M-NCPPC offers a competitive salary range of $57,062 to $101,062 at the Fitness Center Manager level with an excellent benefits package including generous leave, extensive health coverage, deferred compensation plan, employer's retirement plan, and work-life programs. Examples of Important Duties


  • Assist with hiring, supervision & evaluation of Fitness Center staff to include: Group Exercise Instructors & Personal Trainers, Floor and Customer Service staff.

  • Provide training opportunities for Fitness Center staff.

  • Assist with accurately processing, monitoring and maintaining Fitness Center Staff timekeeping processes, evaluations, and certifications.

  • Inventory and distribution of Fitness Center Staff uniforms.

  • Oversee and monitor Fitness Center Customer Service Desk Staff in the collection of money, selling of memberships and greeting of members and patrons.

  • Oversee and monitor Fitness Center Group Fitness Instructors in the scheduling, promotion, and development of enriching classes.

  • Develop & coordinate various events to promote Fitness Center memberships, fitness camps, group exercise & personal training programs, including women’s, youth & senior specific programs.

  • Prepare and monitor monthly statistics, maintenance and purchasing logs.

  • Assist in the oversite of the Fitness Center budget and monitoring of expenses and revenues.

  • Work with the Customer Service Manager & Finance Manager on the daily collection of Fitness Center funds through Parks Direct (RecTrac) and fixed assets tracking.

  • Initiate various purchases for the Fitness Center while adhering to Commission Procurement procedures.

  • Prepare correspondence in a timely manner for the Fitness Center Manager, General Manager and Division Chief, as required.

  • Respond effectively to inquiries, concerns, and complaints from the public.

  • Assist Sportsplex Operations Team and Facility Services Division with operational needs and keep all equipment and venues in operating, safe and top condition.

  • Assist with coordinating marketing, special events & customer service needs with appropriate staff of Sportsplex.

  • Responsible for the inventory of equipment, supplies and materials for the Fitness Center.

  • Responsible for the periodic inspection of equipment and materials for safety.

  • Periodically serve as Manager on Duty at Sportsplex.

  • Serve on various Divisional and Department-Wide committee assignments.

  • On call, as Fitness Center is operational 100 hours/week.

Minimum Qualifications


  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation, Recreation Management, Facility Management, Education, Business Administration, Physical Education, Communication, Leisure Services, or any related field.
  2. One (1) year of responsible professional experience working in a facility related to parks, recreation, leisure services, or area of required specialty (e.g., arts, performing arts, tennis, aquatics, ice rinks).
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total five (5) years.
  4. Valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of the position.
  5. Contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may require valid: (a) operating license (e.g., county pool operator, childcare license) as appropriate; (b) First Aid, CPR, and automated external defibrillator (AED) certifications; or (c) certifications as related to assignment (e.g., Lifeguard Instruction, Fundamentals of Gymnastics).
  6. Pass Commission medical exam.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. One or more certifications from a nationally recognized certification body such as: NSCA, ACSM, ACE, NASM or AFAA
